Our school community had an exciting day as California State Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye presented the Civic Learning Award of Excellence to Kumeyaay.

Distinguished guests included SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten, SDUSD Area 1 Superintendent Bruce Bivins, County Supervisor Dave Roberts, San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Jeffrey Barton and a representative from City Council Member Scott Sherman's Office. Our guests were so impressed by the entire school community.

Spirit Club leaders greeted guests, walked them through campus and shared stories about the way we live and learn as Kumeyaay Coyotes. The guests then had the opportunity to see student work and pictures from every grade level and hear about the learning in our classrooms around building character, citizenship, thinking critically and engaging in academic conversations around topics that are relevant in the world today. Our guests explored Project HOWL and heard from students about the importance of our drought tolerant native habitat and water conservation in our Garden to Cafe area. At our Tribal Meeting assembly, the Chief Justice praised our students for their commitment to being agents of change in the world and the Superintendent congratulated the entire school community for "bringing civic engagement to life."

The Civic Engagement Award of Excellence is a tremendous honor for our school to receive. There are only three schools in the state of California who are receiving this award, and we are the only elementary school in the state to be honored.

State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson announced Kumeyaay as a 2016 California Gold Ribbon School!

The California Gold Ribbon School Award was created to honor schools based on a model program or practice that the school has adopted that includes standards based activities, projects, strategies, and practices which can be replicated by other local educational agencies.

Kumeyaay is being recognized for the for Creating a Social, Academic, and Physical Environment Worthy of Our Students. We described our model for continuous improvement and practice in these areas and our visit by the validation team in March documented our current practices.

The Gold Ribbon Award is another validation of the dedication and collaboration here at Kumeyaay. Our staff, students, parents and community work well together to create a unique and special environment to promote student engagement and success.
